Finding Your Brand Aesthetic: A ReRev Labs Workflow
At ReRev Labs, our philosophy is simple: you probably don’t need to start from scratch. Instead of reinventing the wheel, we look for existing tools that align with our vision and then repurpose them in ways that are uniquely ours.
This workflow breaks down exactly that process. I needed to find a visual language that married our two core aesthetic pillars: nature and technology. Specifically, I wanted to express our concept of "tech as a lifeforce," the idea that technology is as inevitable and generative as water, fire, or plant life. Tech as a natural element, not an intrusion.
The Inspiration That Stuck
Every great creative process starts somewhere. For me, it started with an image from Rihanna’s 2019 mixtape, Angel. I stumbled upon it years ago, and it never left me. It’s the kind of visual that completely rewires how you see the world once you’ve truly seen it.
When it was time to define ReRev Labs’ visual identity, nothing felt more fitting than returning to that image. It seemed to embody everything we were trying to communicate. But there was a problem: due to copyright law, I couldn’t use the original image directly.
The Creative Challenge
My challenge was clear: how could I capture the essence and emotional truth of that reference while building something entirely new?
The answer came quickly: pixelated nature. Specifically, a pixelated waterfall, organic motion rendered through digital geometry. The goal was to create not just a static image, but a living, moving video.
I quickly discovered that popular tools like Canva have pixelation effects, but they only work on still images. That wasn’t going to cut it. I needed creative control, reliability, and the ability to work with video.
Discovering the Perfect Tool
A quick search led me to a tool called Video to Pixel Art, built by collidingscopes. This is exactly the kind of discovery our philosophy celebrates, a tool created by a developer with real creative sensibilities, designed specifically to solve this problem.
What made it perfect?
Client-side processing: No uploading to a distant server. My work stayed with me, secure and owned.
Customization: I had full control over pixel size, color palette, and more.
Simplicity: I could simply upload a video, adjust the settings, and watch the magic happen.
I sourced a base video from Pixabay, a beautiful waterfall, and ran it through the tool. The result was exactly what I envisioned: pixelated motion, nature rendered through technology, the boundary between the two beautifully blurred.
The Moment It All Clicked
When I saw that final pixelated waterfall, something shifted. This was ReRev Labs’ ethos made visual. Nature and technology in perfect synthesis. The philosophical concept we'd been circling finally had a face.
It was exactly what I needed, a visual anchor for everything that follows.
What Comes Next
An inspiring visual is just the beginning. Now comes the harder work: layering in the functionality. This means making sure that this beautiful concept actually serves the brand across different platforms and use cases, turning aesthetic into strategy.
But that’s a workflow for another day. For now, this moment, finding that perfect visual expression of who we are, feels like the right place to pause and reflect.
The Lesson: Your brand identity doesn't need to start from scratch. Sometimes it already exists somewhere, in an image that moved you, a tool that solved a problem, a combination of elements that felt true before you could articulate why. The work is in recognizing it and then having the patience and creativity to build outward from there.
